Fit Stars program

Fun cross-curricular fitness sessions for schools and nurseries.

With lots of fact-finding and interaction the children will consolidate their learning through individual movement, team-games and adventure story-telling. By harnessing their imagination, the children are compelled to join in each activity to complete the fun adventure and their mission to be a ‘Fit Star’!

Explorers series: Christopher Columbus

The Craft: origami sailor hat. Susan can do this with the children or we provide instructions for it to be done before the session.

The introduction with Susan asking the children questions about what they have been learning about.

Warm-up: simple moves or games to get the children moving - run, skip, side step or lunge to different corners that have been designated as different countries - and listening out for instructions

Teamwork game: after more questions about the topic another active game will be played demonstrating how teamwork is essential in many parts of life e.g. sailors (children) passing cargo (beanbags) to each other without dropping it in the sea!

Main adventure: after a short discussion where children may suggest their own moves we put the facts we’ve discussed into an adventure where common bodyweight moves are disguised as actions to help us complete the mission. E.g. climbing the rigging (high knees running), crashing waves (squat jumps)

Games and activities e.g. sitting in team lines, rowing to shore.

Stretching and discussion of facts and activities

“It was great to see children learning through fitness.”

“This term Year 2 have been learning all about Explorers. On Monday, in PE, the children found out all about Christopher Columbus and his journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Su from Family Fitness, taught the children all about Columbus's journey whilst keeping them moving and active throughout. Thank you Su for such a fantastic lesson, it was great to see all the children learning through fitness.”

Nursery School Reviews

“Susan was all prepared for the session, going through children’s’ interests and the current theme with myself beforehand. Susan took on board everything discussed and was full of recourses and activity ideas on the day. Everything went into plan and the children loved their time with Susan.

Susan was extremely friendly and the children and staff both warmed up to her very quickly. She has a very natural approach towards the children and followed her instructions eagerly.

Although the space provided was not big enough, Susan however adapted to this and still managed to use the space effectively and achieve the outcome of the activity.

The use of music was great and appropriate as the children really enjoyed moving their bodies to the rhythm and following the instructions better.

Children abilities were considered throughout and Susan was able to assign members of staff where more support were needed for the children while she was leading the group.

I think such exercise experiences in a fun and musical way when relating to the topic of children’s interest can definitely benefit the children and help with their development. We had children who wouldn’t normally join in mark making or threading activities but the way this session was planned got everyone engaged and they benefited hugely from this experience.”
